Chapter 15

Mandy

Sitting down at my desk, I stare at my phone like it's a snake that's going to bite me. It’s funny how I think I can't live without my phone until I have to make a phone call that I really don't want to make.

After taking a few more deep breaths, I pick up the phone and dial Rebecca's number. It rings a few times before she picks up.

"Hey Mandy, everything okay? It’s kind of early."

"Yeah, do you have a minute to chat?"

"For you always. I was up early and made Dale some breakfast before he went to work. Now, I'm just being lazy on the couch, so I have all the time that you need."

"Well, I just got into work, so I only have a few minutes," I say, setting the stage for being interrupted if needed. Of course, that's when Lexi peeks her head in and nods, and stands there, ready to be my rescuer if needed. God, I love that girl.

Taking another deep breath, I decide that if I'm going to do this, I should at least do this in person. Rebecca deserves that.

"So, I have something kind of important that I really need to talk to you about. And I was hoping that maybe I could come up and you and I could have lunch this weekend. I'm off Sunday."

Rebecca hesitates for only a moment before answering, "Girl, you are welcome up here anytime and you don't need an excuse to come have lunch with me. Dale will be working and there is this amazing Italian place that just opened up a couple of blocks from the house. How about I order takeout and we can eat here at the house?"

"That sounds perfect. If I leave here by nine, I'll be up there no later than noon."

"All right, I'll see you then. Go get to work, so you don't get in trouble, or they make you work this weekend to make up for it," she laughs.

We say our goodbyes, and I hang up, and Lexi just looks at me.

"Rebecca and I have been friends for almost ten years. No matter the outcome, I really think she deserves to be told this face to face. But she is pregnant, so if I come in with a black eye, you'll know why." I try to make a joke of it, but Lexi isn’t smiling.

"It’s just you are putting it off for another day and you can't keep doing that. But let's push it out of our heads because Friday is the surprise party to tell everyone. Noah's family gets in on Thursday, and they are telling Noah that it's just an excuse to have his sister see the Savannah college and for them to be there for his birthday."

"What a double life you lead," and we both erupt into giggles. This whole surprise party could go wrong or it could go right, but so far Lexi has been able to hide their secret and now they only have a couple more days to do so.
